A/Prof Shiva Subramaniam

Associate Professor Shiva Subramaniam was born and raised in Perth, WA. He completed Dentistry at the University of Western Australia and his medical degree at the University of Melbourne. Following his medical school, his specialty Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical (FRACDS OMS) training was completed in Victoria, where he was awarded the prestigious Australian & New Zealand Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons' Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in the specialist examination.

Dr Subramaniam then spent a further two years in subspecialty training in Head & Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction, including one year at one of the highest volume units in Europe: the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. During this time, he completed the UK & Ireland Specialty examination via the Royal College of Surgeons, where he was once again awarded the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons' Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in the examination, across the United Kingdom and Ireland; thus making him the only surgeon to win both the Australia/New Zealand and UK/Ireland medals.

After working in Auckland, New Zealand as a consultant, he returned to Glasgow where he practiced as a Maxillofacial/Head & Neck Surgeon for a time before arriving home in Australia to commence Practice in Melbourne. He is currently working as a consultant at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and in private practice in Melbourne. His clinical interests include wisdom teeth, dental implants (including zygomatic implants), orthognathic surgery, benign and malignant pathology of the head and neck, salivary gland disease, facial trauma, skin cancer and free tissue transfer/microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck. He is fully credentialed by the RACDS for subspecialty practice in Head & Neck Oncology & Reconstruction.
